FAQ

What is the significance of pet grooming?

Pet grooming  is significant for many reasons! Groomers not only make your puppy look cute, they also:

1) Trim the toenails (which is essential for the growth of your pup physical structure)
2) Shave the pads of their feet (the real thick haired dogs especially, can get matts in between their pads and cause irritation and pain, from moisture from rain, snow, or from chewing on it, can lead to fungus which on some breads can lead to a life time of yeast and fungus among other skin ailments, that all stemmed from some matted toes. Older dogs that live w slick surfaced floors get less traction w hairy pads, leading to slips or falls!) Foot care is essential for your pup!
3) Shave the hair off the top of their nose to between their eyes (or most of the top) to keep that hair out of their eyes, or poking their eyes, causing tears and eye boogers and vision loss.
4) Groomers also express the anal glands, which can cause some pups a lot of discomfort and pain and if not expressed on a regular bases.
5)
Groomers also shave the potty parts 1&2 (again, essential if your pup has a fluffy butt and has a habit of getting poo stuck in their fur. Over time this can build up and dry up over the covering of the rectum and they can not poo. If left unnoticed it can do serious harm to your pup)
6)
Groomers also, if need be clean and pull the hair out of the ears of the dogs that have it. (A lot of ear hair can effect their hearing and the health of the ear). Proving this is also essential for your pup's health.
7)
Groomers also shave the belly and the armpits. Matts can sometimes start in these areas and can be the easiest places to accidentally nick them, if they have heavy matting.

To maintain a happy and healthy pup grooming is an essential! It's not only about looks!

What are some processes we do to ensure comfortability while brushing the pet's teeth?

Initial cleaning of the dog's teeth may be a challenge, but the following tips will ensure both the dog and the specialist get comfortable with time.
Correct Tools for Brushing Tooth
Before beginning brushing a pet's teeth, our groomers ensure they have the safest toothpaste and friendly toothbrush for the pet. Because the pets cannot spit out the toothpaste, it is inappropriate to use human toothpaste. Besides, human toothpaste has fluoride, which may upset the dog's stomach. In certain circumstances, xylitol, which is harmful to the dogs, maybe a component of the human toothpastes.

Our professional groomers use specific products formulated and designed for the pets. Pet toothpastes lack foaming agents, are flavored, and safe when swallowed. Note that peanut butter, seafood, beef, and poultry flavors will excite your pets when incorporated in cleaning their teeth. For younger dogs, pet toothbrushes that fit on your finger is the best. It is easy to maneuver them in the pet's mouth. Larger dogs will respond better with larger toothbrushes as it is easy to reach the back teeth.

Carry Out Test Run
After assembling the correct tools, the next step is to ensure that the pet gets used to the toothbrush. Before our groomers can use the toothbrush, they will ensure the dog is comfortable with it through regularly lifting the lips and providing rewards for good habits. They may consider using their fingers or dental wipes to ensure the dog gets used to something within their mouths.

As the dog becomes more comfortable, brushing its teeth will be easier. After the pets get used to the brushes, our groomers will begin with shorter sessions then gradually increase the sessions. We will clean all your pet's teeth in a sitting.

Get A Comfortable Posture
Our experienced pet groomers will position the pets in a way that makes it easier to brush. However, the groomers are also very keen not to force the pets if they seem uncomfortable or upset as they may perceive brushing negatively.

Target the Gums
Instead of opening the pet's mouth, it's better to lift the pet's lips and focus on the point the gum line meets the teeth. While brushing, we pay much attention to the back teeth because of the high chances of tartar and plaque accumulation. Fontana's experienced pet groomers employ praise while brushing the pets' teeth to make them more comfortable.
What are some pet grooming products?

There are lots of different type brushes on the market but the brushes we love and always recommend are called Simpson flexi brushes. There are 4 different types which we use:
  • Green – All rounder, good for Yorkies and puppies.
  • Purple – All rounder, good for double coated dogs and Shih tzu type coats.
  • Blue – For Doodles, or any dog with a curly coat.
  • Red – De matting brush (not recommend for use other than by dog groomers)

These brushes are flexible and will be gentler for your dog when used correctly. Don’t forget the importance of using a metal comb after.

When you come back from a walk with your dog and they get wet, we strongly suggest using a leave in conditioning spray for them before brushing as this will help keep their coat tangle free and they can dry naturally.

The conditioning sprays we recommend are:
  • Julie Harris – Management Spray.
  • DezynaDog Amazing Trix Coat Spray
